Istanbul Airport Transfers in Winter: Preparing for Snow, Rain and Flight Changes

Winter in Istanbul is harsher than in the Mediterranean resorts: long rainy spells from November to March, and snowfalls in January and February that can slow the city for days at a time. For an airport transfer that means two things: journeys take longer, and flight times change more often. A private transfer with a driver takes on exactly those two uncertainties in winter. Your vehicle is ready, your flight is tracked and your price is fixed. This guide explains how to plan your transfer to or from Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gökçen during the winter months.

Driving times in rain and snow

On a rainy weekday evening, the drive from Taksim to Istanbul Airport can take 20 to 30 minutes longer than on a dry day. With snow the gap widens further; city streets slow down and the bridge approaches back up. Two rules help for a winter return transfer: use the upper end of the district time ranges, and add another 20 minutes on days with a weather warning. The ranges for normal conditions are listed district by district in our return transfer guide.

Winter tyres and vehicle preparation

In Türkiye, commercial passenger vehicles are required to use winter tyres during the winter months, and Solevra Travel vehicles are prepared accordingly. On snowy days our drivers choose the route according to current road conditions. In districts with steep, narrow streets (Cihangir, Galata and parts of Sultanahmet), it may not be possible to drive right up to the hotel door; in that case your driver agrees the nearest safe point with you and helps with the luggage. A warm, clean and dry cabin is part of the standard winter service.

Flight changes are more frequent in winter: why tracking matters

Snow and fog are the most common reasons for delays, diversions and cancellations at Istanbul's airports. When you enter your flight number at booking, the flight is tracked: on a delay your driver arrives for the actual landing time, and on an early landing is ready ahead of it. If your flight is cancelled or you are rebooked, you only need to send us the new flight number and your booking moves to the new flight under the same reservation number. Every scenario is covered in our article on delayed and cancelled flights.

Heavy coats, ski equipment and luggage

Even if the number of suitcases fits a vehicle class on paper, a ski bag or snowboard is a long item that will not fit in a sedan boot. An Eco Van or VIP Van is the right choice; mention ski equipment in the booking note and the appropriate vehicle is recommended. If you are heading straight from the airport to Uludağ, book the journey as an intercity private transfer and carry your equipment in one go.

Early darkness and meet and greet

In December it is dark in Istanbul by around 5 p.m. Even an afternoon landing leaves you walking out of arrivals into darkness, cold and rain. Meet and greet is the extra service that earns its keep most in winter: your driver waits in the arrivals hall with a name board, carries your luggage and you step straight into a heated car instead of looking for a vehicle outside. How it works is explained in our airport meet and greet article.

Planning tips for winter

  • Always enter your flight number; the chance of a schedule change is higher in winter.
  • For return transfers use the upper end of the time ranges, and add 20 minutes on days with a weather warning.
  • Choose a van class for ski equipment or extra luggage and note it in the booking.
  • If your hotel is on a steep or narrow street, add a note to the address field so the driver can plan the meeting point.
  • Book the outbound and return together; when winter plans change, everything is updated under one reservation number.

Is the transfer cancelled when it snows?

As long as the roads are open the service continues, with winter-tyre vehicles and routes chosen for current conditions. In the exceptional case of roads being officially closed, we contact you and move the booking to a new time.

Does the price change in winter?

No. The price is shown fixed and inclusive of VAT on the booking screen, and no extra charge is made for a journey that takes longer because of the weather.

Will my skis fit in a sedan?

A ski bag is usually too long for a sedan boot. Choose an Eco Van or VIP Van and mention the equipment in the booking note.

What if fog diverts my flight to the other airport?

Send us the new landing details. Your transfer is rearranged for whichever airport you land at, Istanbul Airport or Sabiha Gökçen, under the same reservation number.

In winter rain or under snow, it is a few steps from the arrivals hall to a heated car waiting for you: enter your flight number and get your price.
